Heritage Design and Build
Another stunning Heritage home; this one built on the site of a former golf course - the original clubhouse was demolished to make way for this mansion.
Heritage arranged for us to meet with the owner-to-be, who was hugely interested in our practical use of renewable technologies.
The result was possibly our greenest house ever. An oversized array of solar thermal panels provides great charges of heat to the large bank of Heat Storage Cells shown here - they provide all of this 1000 square metre home's hot water, under floor heating and indoor pool air heat requirement for more than six months of the year.
If our Control System detects the adverse result of a short, dull Winter day - a significant drop of temperature in the Heat Storage Cells - the Heat Pump is run on an a cheap overnight electricity tariff to re-charge them for the next day.
The Heat Pump also runs for a short period every day to heat the pool water and to create the coolant required to air-condition the gymnasium and cinema.
The result - extraordinarily low heating bills and no local Carbon Dioxide emissions.

Heating: 18 square metres of evacuated tube solar panels keep 16 Heat Storage Cells and 1,400ltr of hot water storage topped up.The tanks and cells supply domestic hot water, the Under Floor Heating system and heat the pool air. A 40kW Ground Source Heat Pump is powered by more than 2km of ground loop buried 1.2M below the ground surface; the Heat Pump runs at night if the storage needs topping up, and for a burst during the day to heat the pool water.
Ventilation: The heat recovery system extracts stale air from wet areas – kitchens, bathrooms and the gymnasium – and replaces it with fresh, filtered air fed into the living areas. In colder weather, the incoming air is warmed by heat recovered from the outgoing stale air (Heat Recovery Ventilation), further adding to energy efficiency.
Cooling: As the outside temperature rises, the GreenTec System will initially turn off the Under Floor Heating and the Heat Recovery Ventilation. If the temperature in the house continues to rise, the system will direct cold Ground Loop fluid to cool incoming air; an extension of the same system air-conditions the gymnasium and cinema.
Environment: Shillinglee's heating and ventilation system annually produces much less than half the amount of CO2 - none of it locally – than it would if it were powered by a conventional gas boiler. And the high proportion of solar heat harvested means that the amount saved annually on heating rises year on year - one very effective investment in renewable technologies that will pay for itself many times over and add value to the home.
